TV & Radio

I’ve been shooting for the BBC for over fifteen years and the images I shoot tend to fall into the following categories:

Studio portraits

I would be asked by a regional station, such as BBC York, Lincolnshire, Humberside. Leeds, Merseyside, or Manchester, to photograph their presenters so that they can use the images across the iPlayer, BBC Sounds or for display at the stations and for presenter postcards. In the biggest available space, I put up a large white paper background and use four or five lights. I often have a make up artist on board and we break down the sessions into 30 / 40 minute slots. I shoot lots of different angles and crops, always striving to get across the presenters personality and energy whilst reflecting their show. I often photograph teams and groups as well.

Reportage photography of events

I always enjoy these shoots, they are so much fun. I photographed ‘CBeebies dances into Leeds with the Northern Ballet’ capturing the event itself as well as the reaction on the children’s faces. I was behind the scenes at the special live edition of Look North to celebrate the 50th year. My first live TV experience and I loved it.

Covering the party afterwards I recognised so many of the past presenters I’d grown up watching. I’ve photographed Harry and Amy abseiling from the Hallam University building to raise money for Children in Need, learning I need to get quicker at running up and down stairs!

Promotional images for a particular radio / tv show

This is where I’m asked to produce illustrative images to promote a new radio or TV show such as You, Me and the Big C, Stephanie Hirst’s new radio show, Keeley Donovan for Inside Out, Steve Brown for 5Live or Kat Cowan for her new food programme for Radio Sheffield. Working with BBC publicists, together we create eye catching images that can be used to promote the shows across the iPlayer or BBC Sounds and that can be distributed to the media.
