Editorial

I shoot for all types of magazines – Sunday supplements, national consumer magazines, trade publications and corporate magazines. I shoot on location across the North of England – Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Hull … Editorial photo shoots come in all shapes and sizes and I often arrive at a previously unseen location, not knowing what the subject looks like, what they have in their wardrobe or how relaxed they will be in front of camera, but it’s all part of the challenge.  Every magazine has their own style and each feature has it’s own feel.

When I first started out, I used to find this daunting but now I relish the challenge of thinking on my feet, picking out the right clothes, finding quirky last minute locations and relaxing the sitter in order to get the best out of them and fulfill the magazine’s brief.  I find myself in so many different locations – a tiny house, an enormous mansion, on the beach, in the park, at a local cafe, in an office or a factory… each one new and inspiring.  Every story I shoot features someone new and meeting them and learning about their life is the best part of the job.

“I always know that whenever I commission Claire the shoot is in safe hands.  She gives 100% and I always get top quality images, with lots of variety and different crops and poses.   I know I’ll get the pictures I want when Claire shoots for me.  And I am never disappointed!”

Jo Lockwood, Picture Editor, Prima.

“I’ve been commissioning Claire for the last ten years and she is always a pleasure to deal with.  She listens to what you want, asks the right questions, and just gets on with it without a fuss.  It really is a pleasure to work with her and I always know she is going to send me a really pretty shoot with loads of options to choose from”.

Kelly Preedy, Picture Editor, Marie Claire UK.

“First of all I’ve got say the quality of Claire’s work is brilliant. We commission her for every edition of Business Agenda, sometimes 2 or 3 shoots an issue, and she is our first port of call for business portraits. She follows a brief to the tee, and always gets the best out of her subjects whether she has them for an hour or just 10 mins. Her use of light and colour, and her choice of composition are consistently excellent”.

Andrew Cowan, Group Art Director, John Brown Media.

“Claire Wood has been a great contact to have. We often have interview and people pieces that need photographing across the UK, and Claire has been our go-to for northern shoots. She is always a pleasure to work with and produces fantastic quality of photos”.

“Claire Wood has been a regular contributor to Fabulous Magazine since its launch. Claire’s work is beautifully composed and she always produces characterful and sympathetic portraits which are ideal for our magazine. I would have no hesitation in commissioning her however difficult and demanding the assignment”.

Alan Gittos, Picture Director, Fabulous Magazine.

“Claire’s great to work with, the kind of photographer you can rely on and trust, always cheery and helpful, goes the extra mile and is willing to push the boundaries to get great shots every time”.

Shaun Scott Baker, Deputy Picture editor, Woman magazine.

“We regularly used Claire for cover story shoots for EN Magazine. If you want someone to turn up for five minutes, take a few snaps and hope for the best, Claire isn’t your woman. If, on the other hand, you want a photographer who will strain every sinew to wring the best results out of her sitters then you’ve come to the right place. I’ll never forget, for example, the precise instructions she gave to Peter Jones (yes, that Peter Jones) about the exact placement of his eyebrows! It’s the tiny little details that alone may not make much difference but when all are taken together make the difference between a competent picture and an image that has enduring power and quality. Claire doesn’t leave anything to chance when lighting, posing and carrying out a photoshoot. If you hire her you won’t be doing so either”.

Stuart Anderson, Editor of EN magazine until 2012.
